Fantastic atmosphere created across these tracks. The production is amazing and the songs top notch. I almost see "Ascension" as a matter of blackened taste - how far down do you want to fall down this spiral? By the time you reach the final tracks, there is an overwhelming sense that you are freefalling into the sound. As you can see from some other comments, you're either on or off the ride by this point. For me, I love this shit.
Favorite track: Au Bord Du Gouffre.

Huge ambience, Sounds like we're in hell from start to finish. A bit more energetic and a bit less emotional than Exile, the two albums are roughly on the same level in my opinion.

Revised take on this: I've listened to Ascension again over the last two days in preparation for seeing RLHT in Trier and I was able to connect to this so much better than before. As another comment describes it, this record really is a downward spiral into increasingly blackened territory - and especially the latter tracks, which I did not like that much initially (I was a mere cub, or deaf) are pulling me under like a maelstrom. I still enjoy the intense melodicism and strong production.

REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER step outside of the proverbial confines of black metal with ‘Ascension,’ ultimately creating dramatic soundscapes enveloped in extremity. Layered with grandiose riffage, agonizing vocals, and pockets of ambient progression, the French outfit put forth an offering that devours the listener with sweeping crescendos of blackened intensity.

Insightful telling of the apparent contradictions in life and the despair that ensues. VI is my favorite, closely followed by II.

What I like the most about this album is that it seems to be more riff-oriented and memorable compared to their earlier albums which were chock-full of crazy dissonant riffage but their songs often meandered or lacked any distinct progression. That is not to say that this this album is any less dense, but is certainly a little catchier, here and there. As always with Ulcerate, their music rewards repeated listening while clearly retaining the tragic, emotional feeling the band is known for.
